In the wake of COVID-19 we’ve come to realize that a new day in age is upon us, as an African American male dealing with the

pandemic as well as social injustice it has been a stressful time. Having dealt with a near two-month lock down plus Racial

tensions I’ve come to realize that the best thing to do is to either support the cause fear free and in relation to COVID-19 try

our best not to live in fear. Now to address life after COVID-19 and enduring, it’s opened my eyes to the reality that the term “

Friend ” is used loosely, to stoppage of proper communication was actually people temporarily filling in void’s they once never

addressed. Having dealt with anxiety in my early year’s a sense of loneliness struck me during this pandemic having triggered a

lot of emotions that were either hidden or soon surfaced, after 2 months of lock-down I was at my wit’s end and had to take a

three-day hiatus to another city 2 hour’s away because my subconscious couldn’t take being inside the house twenty-four hours a

day and not being able to see people or communicate with people i normally would like humans do face to face human to human

fashion. Now with all this to be said this is just the beginning of a transition that will soon become normal life, yes we can’t

stop a pandemic from happening but fear and misinformation was all too prominent, and not having clear leadership on a national

and international level made things a lot more difficult not just mentally and physically but also financially. For the last five

years I’ve had an opportunity to run a foundation based on how social media affects your mental and behavioral health –

www.SocialMediaAwareness.com , and sadly how it’s impacted our lives as users .To see how social media is being used to target

protesters and those who support in solidarity was very disheartening and to know that social media is being used to take away

free speech as well as Target individuals who are frustrated and just want to express themselves to me opened up a new belief that

our position in the world as American citizens have changed and it’s being showed on how we handle pandemics,Police brutality and

politics for the very citizens needing help. Now being someone with a disability and having dealt with specific learning

disabilities since a young age it goes to show marginalized people can get caught into a new ideology or belief based on emotions

and influences and trauma past and current. Whether it’s a post online or place of origin or religious belief attacking someone

whether verbally or physically isn’t the way to live and it isn’t the way to conduct ourselves as human beings. So I leave you

with this for those who seek guidance on how to handle this with the utmost urgency when you see something, say something but also

know your voice is powerful and understanding for those with disabilities as well can make a change that there is power in

numbers. Don’t lose faith and there is hope. “ One post can change the mind, one can change a generation”

The Social Media Awareness movement is addressing the online realm, as we currently know it. Currently , there is a lot of question on what is freedom, who is in control and what is real, do we own our own data in relation to privacy, and what is fake or considered propaganda and are we sovereign in the online world or is our identity being controlled. As a global connector and observer of the online world, We've learned that many realities are exposed that before the introduction of social media would take years and sometimes after tragic moment's to realize. The whole purpose of “ Social Media “ was to be Social in the online space giving us unprecedented access to people of all levels and statuses.

Social Media has streamlined communication to a degree where now it’s distorted on a national and global level. This global and national distortion has given rise to beliefs in counties that would be forbidden and old industries

being exposed for what once only insiders would know. This disruption of the “ System “ is no longer a contained narrative, it’s now been proven that Social Media can be used to topple powerful governments and using misinformation regardless of a political party, this creates new social changes amongst the online class system built in the online world.

This new class system is addressed and created based on LIKES AND FOLLOWERS, like any new social club or “ Society “ there have to be leaders and followers and in the Social Media World, there is no physical interaction to secure control of an audience like physical world influence and past historical events it required an ideology to be developed and then a group to deliver the messages and eventually parties were formed to push the which requires Social Media, the companies themselves are privately held companies that are independent of government with their CEO’s as the de facto leaders of this Social Media World, these CEO’s whether intentional or unintentional have changed the very fabric of communication and self identification which requires subconscious understanding.

When it comes to the ethical usage of Social Media is now operating in dangerous territory, when users questions national security and their rights in the online world we bring into question like any newly built realm or territory there are boundaries to which a person or group belongs to in order to build a self identity and markers to know habits and beliefs and functions. In the online world, there is a new type of name for this online subconscious development called the “ Social Media Persona “ introduced by the Triple Conscious Theory a nod to W.E.B Dubois in relation to African Americans in the 20th Century. When understanding this “ Quantum Theory “ of the 21st Century and putting a name to the persona that an individual would create in order to build their online and how others would address based on post, comments and interactions and influence in that specific space and time to understanding an personas “ Social Media Subconscious “ .

When understanding someone's Social Media Subconscious we must observe not just the habits but their online mark, meaning why they use and what is their desired outcomes for using that specific platform. So we in the same term do in depth “ Cyber Psycho Analysis “ of the self built profile of the person. There is no specific time frame to identify when a Full Cyber Psycho Analysis is completed or What a fully developed “ Social Media Persona “ is in terms of full life cycle.

Why is the Social Media Persona Considered As the New B.F Skinner Box? Here is All You Need to Know!

Triple Conscious Theory
September 19, 20229 min read

Doctor Of #SocialMedia — (Founder) Social Media Awareness

Social media affects everyone. If social media is used in a wrong and bad manner, it initiates many psychological disorders. Why is everyone so engaged with social media and its platforms? Despite the fact that excessive activities on social media give anxiety and severe depression. People nowadays are forced to stay active virtually by themselves; they run after comments, likes, and views on their online stuff.

A few years back, people were only concerned with their relations with friends and family, but now the people are more conscious about their social media audience. Maybe this is the reason we have considered the B.F Skinner box as the social media persona. It’s all about your personality that you portray on online platforms and seek positive responses and rewards. Doesn’t it relate to the behavior of rats described by B.F skinner?

The international team of scientists worked on a computational model to see the ratio of the number of times a person posts his stuff and the number of likes, comments, and shares he receives. Then, these international scientists compared the data with the behavior of the rats. They observed that the social media persona is related to the operant conditioning explained by B.F Skinner. They also observed that people behave like a rat to get shares and likes as the rat does for the food. The scientists published their theory in the journal nature communication and further talked about the harmful effects of social media on human mental health.

Unfortunately, the example is quite weird, but this is what the truth is. Just like the rats search for food to get reward feelings, people condition their brains to feel good after receiving comments and likes on their posts. The more a person uploads or posts on social media, the more he is acting like a rat searching for the meal. To read more facts of social media persona, just go through the operant conditioning and B.F Skinner’s theory.

Operant Conditioning and B.F Skinner’s Box

Skinner is called the father of operant conditioning. He explained this theory with the example of a rat. According to his principles, it’s said that behavior that is followed by pleasant effects has more chances to be repeatedly done, whereas the behavior which is followed by unpleasant effects is less likely to be repeated.

Moreover, B.F skinner observed the voluntary response of an organism when it’s kept to a certain environment. He called this response an operant. Operant conditioning is all about observations of responses through positive and negative reinforcement that either strengthens the response or weakens it. After a reward or positive reinforcement, an organism repeatedly does the action. Psychologist B.F skinner used a box as well to do his experimental task on a rat.

According to two years of study, one million posts from 2000 Instagram accounts were founded. This is how actively; our generation participates in meme games. The team discovered that the more the user got the response, the more they shared memes. It’s completely relatable with the behavior of rats. Moreover, the team didn’t say that humans are like rats, and they don’t have any difference. They just compared the behavior of humans on social media with the response of rats towards food.

How Did the Rats Behave?

In operant conditioning, there were responses judged through rats. He placed a Skinner box, a special box for his experiments and observations through rats. In the first step, he kept a hungry rat inside the Skinner box. The rat initially didn’t give a response and remain inactive. Gradually he began to see around and explore the environment. Soon he saw the lever present in the Skinner box; he tried to press it. Upon pressing the lever, the food was released and dropped in the box.

The rat learned this condition and his behavior remained the same whenever he felt hungry. This is how our social media people are behaving. It’s a painful example, but this bitter truth must be chewed. Social media persona is forcing people to run behind the likes, comments, and memes. The more they share posts and memes, the more they get a feeling of receiving attention from the audience.

On the other hand, what skinner did with the rats? He again placed a rat in the box to see negative reinforcement. But this time, he subjected the box to an unpleasant electric current. After exploring the environment, the rat felt hungry and tried to push a lever. As soon he pressed a lever, he experienced the discomfort; the unpleasant current was flown. After pressing the lever several times, he got to know there’s currently on the floor.

What is Social Media Persona?

Social media persona is the phenomenon of reaching the maximum audience through your social media content. It could a post, meme, video, or any written content. It allows persons to portray their fictional character on social media. Most marketing companies develop targeted content and communication. This allows the audience to reach them easily. The more your content is attractive; the more your content will be viewed.

Unfortunately, people nowadays are finding every possible strategy to grow their content and get a great number of likes. They don’t have any business, marketing agency, or any other source of earning for which they want targeted content. Then why are they doing it? People are interested in making fun and increasing their popularity.

Moreover, their aim is not to share informative content or authentic stuff; they just want to be highlighted no matter which kind of content they are sharing. It’s just a game of a few likes and comments. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, what do you find there? More memes and less informative content. People make fan pages to get more followers; they are doing a competition with each other just for comments and followers.

Social Media Persona is the New Skinner Box!

Technology has modernized and revolutionized the world over the past decades, but that revolution didn’t come with positive effects alone. Technology or social media has destroyed our generations badly; it’s bad to see people running after likes and comments. Furthermore, our generation has been wasting their time on social media for many years, and they don’t seem productive nowadays. The truth is, technology has changed us a lot. Students show reluctance to their studies, spend most of their time sharing memes, humor, and unproductive stuff.

In this case, the spinner box is considered as the internet; the lever is a meme or post, and rewards are those likes and comments which people are giving to a particular post. Social media persona has become the priority for the people. They are more serious about it than any other thing. They spend much time and energy to make more competitive stuff to get more likes and comments. They enhance their profiles, accounts, and bio to be viewed more. Is it just our aim? Are we born to gain a few likes and comments?

Obviously, no, this is not our entire agenda; we should be active on social media to see quality content and informative news. But what happens when we give most of our time to it? We become addictive. Just like the rat kept on pressing the lever to feed him, we keep on posting to receive a good amount of likes. Social media is harming all of us potentially HYPERLINK “https://interestingengineering.com/technology-addiction-when-is-technology-too-much".

Have you ever thought about the bad influence of social media? How is it becoming a bad invention for us? Social media has certain bad psychological and health effects. The continuous use of mobile phones decreases our mental stability. Moreover, mobile phones emit waves that are harmful to the human brain. Excessive use of the internet can cause eyestrain and difficulty having the focus on important things.

How bad it’s to see, technology was brought to make our lives easier, but unfortunately, it has spoiled us a lot. We should not give most of our time to it, just use it purposely. It’s better to spend time with friends and family instead of using the phone in gatherings.

Are People Acting like Rats?

‘People are behaving like a rat’ why do we agree with this statement? As you can see, there’s more audience on the social media platforms; your social interaction with people is less when you meet people in person. On the other hand, you get maximum likes and comments on your posts if you speak something or post your stuff. Does it happen in a real-life? Most people have good relations with you just on social media.

Moreover, people are only concerned with likes, shares, views, and comments. They don’t even bother to think that is their stuff worth liking and sharing? It’s all about addiction and portraying your personality as a fictional character.

Research has unveiled that thinking of people who crave comments and likes on social media platforms is not that different from the rats seeking food as a reward. The comments and likes are a reward for social medial addicted people. To test the theory of operant conditioning for humans, the researchers conducted an experiment that was taken online. They asked people to share posts on Instagram to get likes and comments. The team observed that a great number of people posted, and it was compared with the average posts shared regularly. It was seen that people participated in getting likes, and their number of posts gradually increased just for the sake of comments and views.

Final Verdict

It’s concluded that social media has influenced teens, children, and adults badly. Persistent use of social media platforms to increase persona has a bad impact. Moreover, it’s ruining our personal lives, relations, and, more importantly, our health. Instead of spreading meaningless content, we can use social media for good purposes — such as circulating knowledge regarding any current affair, spreading awareness to health problems, and much more.

There are thousands of things that can be positively done. Social media persona is addressing psychological issues for the positive and negative giving a transparent perspective on the matter. People are taking the stress and are surrounded by likes, comments, memes, and humor. Entertainment is good for health, but excessive unproductive things remove your potential and intellectual powers. What to do now? Stop seeking likes, make your education and professional goals, use social media for career development purposes and spend your time with family. Don’t look for fictional characters for social media platforms; pay attention to your real-life and realistic goals.
